SUMMARY:
How to communicate efficiently.
Could you send me last month’s expense report? Depending on cultural context this message could be rude or not.
CULTURAL CONTEXT (HIGH vs LOW)
High cultural context assumes that we have a lot of shared knowledge. We don’t need to say the exact thing, but we understand each other very well. We can use common references, we can infer things. There are a lot of things that we need to say before we say exactly what we need. But if we don’t say those things, it is considered rude. Latam countries usually use it.
Low cultural context means we might not have any shared knowledge. So we have to be very direct. What we say is what we mean exactly. And we have no inferred meaning. The United States and Canada are countries with low cultural context.

how do low context cultures interpret good manners?, or is not a thing?
Jess Harris
Team PlatziWe tend to read into punctuation more to understand tone. Saying things like please and thank you are considered good manners, but it is not always necessary to have an extensive greeting. "Good morning, Emerson! Do you have those expense reports for Q4?"
Jesus Alejandro Gutierrez Guevara
something i have always understimate, in english punctuation is more important than in spanish to sound polite and formal

I'm from Mexico, and to be honest, this "high-context culture" can be really frustrating. Sometimes I have a lot of work, and I try to get straight to the point, but everyone else is like, "Hi Mau, how are you today? Is it hot today, or is it just me?" And I'm just thinking, "C'mon! Just tell me what you need or answer my question!"
I completely understand that it's not personal if someone just asks me directly for something—but there are so many coworkers who get offended by that kind of approach... I hate it!!!

In Colombia usually we use High context culture.

This class is curious. When I worked in Deloitte I had to send message to the customers and/or supplier and how I'm from Latam (specifically in Mexico) I used to send messages in high context. Sometimes I used to send messages to people in Asia e.g. in Singapour an China. That´s way before body message I wrote a greeting.

Does Deloitte use (between coworkers) high or low context?
