Frequency and Habits
Learning to tell time in English is simple when you know the two systems: digital time (numeric) and spoken time using past and to. Use it to ask and answer: “What time is it?” Then choose the right form to speak clearly and naturally.
How do we use it and digital time?
Digital or numeric time states the exact numbers. It’s direct and common in daily life.
- Use it for time: “What time is it?”.
- Answer with numbers: “It’s 7:02.” “It’s 3:35.”.
- For full hours, add o’clock: “It’s 10 o’clock.”.
- Remember: numbers first, then the hour. Clear and fast.
What is spoken time and why is it useful?
Spoken time sounds natural in conversation. The clock is seen in two halves: past (minutes after the hour) and to (minutes before the next hour). This makes time easy to picture and say.
When do we use past and to in spoken time?
Use past from minute 1 to 30. Use to from minute 31 to 59. For to, do a little math: count how many minutes until the next hour.
How do we say minutes past the hour?
- “It’s five past 12.” (12:05).
- “It’s 26 past 3.” (3:26).
- Use half past for :30: “It’s half past 4.” (4:30).
- Use quarter past for :15: “It’s quarter past 8.” (8:15).
How do we say minutes to the next hour?
- “It’s 28 to 12.” (11:32). Count to the next hour.
- “It’s five to 8.” (7:55).
- Use quarter to for :45: “It’s quarter to 6.” (5:45).
Can you identify times quickly with examples?
- “It’s 25 past 6.”.
- 3:57 → “It’s three to 4.”.
- “It’s quarter to 1.”.
How can you practice with quarter, half and o'clock?
Practice builds fluency. Say times out loud using past, to, quarter, half past, and o’clock.
- Ask yourself: “What time is it?”. Answer with spoken time.
- Rewrite digital times as spoken times.
- Focus on key phrases: past, to, half past, quarter past, quarter to, o’clock.
- Use prompts to speak about your day:
- What time do you start work?.
- What time do you have lunch?.
- What time do you have the earliest meeting?.
- What time do you have a meeting on Monday?.
- Download the worksheet in the research section. Add the spoken time to each clock. Share a screenshot of your activity in the comments.
