🚀 Class: What is Your Competition Doing? (Meta Ads Intelligence & Benchmarking) 🕵️

🔑 Key Concepts:

The Three Layers of Competitive Intel: You don't just "look" at competitors—you systematically monitor three distinct layers: (1) Creative & Messaging (what ads are they running, what angles are they testing?), (2) Audience & Funnel Strategy (who are they targeting? Are they prospecting, retargeting, or both?), and (3) Budget & Share of Voice (how much are they spending relative to you in the same auction). The tools: Meta Ad Library (for transparency—see all active ads across the entire Meta ecosystem), Facebook/Instagram Feed Snooping (follow their pages and watch what shows up in your own feed—but beware of algorithmic bias), and third-party tools like SocialPeta, AdSpy, or BigSpy (which scrape and categorize ad creatives globally).
Ad Library is a Strategic Goldmine, Not Just a Curiosity: Go to the Meta Ad Library and search for your competitor's Page. You'll see every active ad they're running across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and Audience Network—including the creative, primary text, headline, description, CTA button, and even the date they started running it. The senior trick: filter by "Active" and sort by "First Aired" to see their newest tests. If they launched 5 new creatives this week, they're in heavy experimentation mode. If they have the same 3 creatives running for 60+ days, they've found a winner and are scaling. This tells you their growth stage—testing vs. scaling—which informs your own counter-strategy.
Share of Voice (SOV) & Auction Overlap: Within Meta Ads Manager, you can access Audience Overlap and Impression Share metrics at the Ad Set level. Impression Share = the percentage of total eligible impressions your ads receive in that audience. If your competitor has 70% SOV and you have 15%, they're outbidding you consistently—time to raise your bid cap or improve your ad relevance score. Auction Overlap tells you how often your ads compete directly with a specific competitor in the same auction. If the overlap is >20%, you're in a bidding war—differentiate with creative, not budget. High overlap with low SOV means you're being outbid; high overlap with high SOV means you're in a stalemate and need to change the creative angle to shift the auction dynamics.

🏭 Industry & Startup Application:

Real-World Example (Fitness App Startup): A fitness app noticed their CPA creeping up from $25 to $40 over 3 weeks. They went to Meta Ad Library and saw their main competitor had launched 12 new creatives in that period—all focusing on "30-day transformation" angles with dramatic before/after photos. Meanwhile, their own creatives had been running for 45 days with generic "Get Fit" messaging. They also checked Impression Share in Ads Manager and saw they'd dropped from 35% to 12% in their core audience. The competitor had increased their budget and was winning the auction with higher relevance scores (because their fresh creatives had higher CTRs). The startup's countermove: they paused all old creatives, launched 6 new angles focused on "sustainable fitness" (differentiation), increased their daily budget by 20% to regain SOV, and added a bid cap 15% higher than their usual to win back impressions. Within 2 weeks, CPA returned to $28. The lesson: they used competitive intel to diagnose a bid war, then counteracted with creative differentiation, not just a budget war.
Why it Matters for Strategy: Competitor analysis isn't about copying—it's about finding white space. If every competitor is running "Discount 20%" creatives, you run "Free Trial" or "Premium Features" creative. If they're all targeting broad interest audiences, you narrow to layered interests or LALs. The Ad Library reveals their positioning—their unique selling proposition, their tone, their offer. This informs your differentiation strategy in the auction. Remember: Meta's algorithm rewards relevance, not just bid. If your creative is more relevant to a user, you can beat a competitor's higher bid with a lower one. Creative differentiation is your cost-efficient lever.

🔮 Future Steps & Project Hooks:

Personal Project (Advanced): Build a Competitive Creative Tracker—a Google Sheet connected to the Meta Ad Library API (or use a scraper) that automatically pulls your top 5 competitors' active ads every week, categorizes them by angle (Discount, Social Proof, Feature-Focused, Urgency, etc.), and tracks their first aired date and active duration. Then, overlay your own creative performance data (CTR, CPA, CPM). This becomes your Creative Intelligence Dashboard—you can see at a glance which angles are trending in your industry and whether your own creatives are outperforming or underperforming the market average. This is how growth teams at companies like Gymshark or HelloFresh continuously dominate their category.
Next Concept to Explore: Now that you know what your competition is doing, the next strategic layer is "Creative Strategy & Dynamic Creatives." We'll dive into how to structure your own creative testing (3-2-2 method: 3 images/videos, 2 headlines, 2 primary texts) to out-innovate them, how to use Dynamic Creative to let Meta's AI find winning combinations automatically, and how to set up creative fatigue rules to kill underperformers within 48 hours. This is where you translate competitive intel into actionable ad execution—turning insights into lower CPAs.
