En esa historia aparecen verbos como run over (atropellar), pass out (desmayarse), come down with (enfermarse de), swing by (pasar por un lugar), fight off (combatir una enfermedad), stop by (visitar brevemente), fill out (llenar un formulario), wear off (desvanecerse el efecto, como la anestesia) y pull through (recuperarse de algo grave).

¿Qué significa come down with en contexto médico? Significa enfermarse de algo, generalmente leve. Ejemplo del relato: I had come down with a bad cold (me había enfermado de un fuerte resfriado).

¿Cuáles son los idioms médicos más útiles para describir el estado de salud?

Estas expresiones te ayudan a hablar sobre vitalidad, recuperación o gravedad sin sonar como un manual técnico. Vale la pena anotarlas en tu picture dictionary porque sirven dentro y fuera del ámbito médico.

Alive and kicking: seguir vivo y en buena forma. He was alive and kicking even after he had an accident.
An apple a day keeps the doctor away: comer frutas y vegetales te mantiene sano. She kept the doctor away when she had an apple a day until she got COVID.
As fit as a fiddle: en excelente condición física. He was as fit as a fiddle until he reached his 50s.
As pale as a ghost: extremadamente pálido, normalmente por shock, miedo o náusea. He was as pale as a ghost when he saw an operation being performed.

Cuando alguien luce as pale as a ghost, conviene sentarlo, darle agua o trasladarlo al hospital, porque suele indicar una reacción fisiológica fuerte.

¿Qué idioms describen recuperación después de una enfermedad?

Algunos idioms se enfocan en el proceso posterior a la enfermedad o cirugía, justo cuando el paciente quiere saber cuándo volverá a su rutina.

Back on one's feet: estar sano otra vez después de una enfermedad. He was back on his feet after his cancer treatment.
To be on the mend: estar mejorando. He was on the mend until he had a relapse.
At death's door: tan enfermo que podría morir. She was at death's door until the medicine kicked in.

Aquí entra un concepto clínico relevante: relapse, que significa una recaída o retroceso después de sentirse mejor. Es común en cuadros como COVID, donde el paciente recupera energía y luego vuelve la fatiga.

¿Qué diferencia hay entre on the mend y back on one's feet?

Al final, pulled through y quedó back on his feet in no time.

¿Por qué importa distinguir wear off, pull through y fight off?
