Preguntas y diagnósticos médicos en inglés

Curso de Inglés Práctico para Consultas Médicas

Recursos

Does your arm hurt more or less when I move it like this? para medir intensidad según el movimiento.
How long has your stomach been hurting? para conocer la duración del síntoma.
Can you take a deep breath in and breathe out slowly, please? como instrucción para auscultar el pecho.
Can you point to where you feel the pain most? para localizar el dolor exacto.

Fíjate que casi todas las preguntas usan el present perfect continuous (has been hurting, have you had).

How long have you had this sore throat? implica que el dolor empezó hace días y aún continúa.

En las conversaciones aparecen respuestas como it has been hurting for weeks now, for a few days, and it's been getting worse y it's been bothering me for a while now.

For weeks now señala varias semanas de duración.
For a few days indica un inicio reciente.
Getting worse comunica que el síntoma empeora.
Bothering me for a while sugiere molestia prolongada sin precisión exacta.

Posible fractura de brazo: I'm afraid it might be broken, but let's get some X-rays to be sure.
Infección estomacal: You may have a bad infection. Let's get an MRI.
Neumonía: You may have pneumonia. Let me write an antibiotic prescription.
COVID: I'm afraid you have COVID. We're going to have to isolate you for at least a week.
Esguince de rodilla: I think it's only sprained. It's not broken.
Espalda con tirón muscular: I think it's just strained. Let's try an ice and heat treatment first.

También aparecen recomendaciones generales que todo paciente escucha alguna vez: please get some rest and drink plenty of liquids.

No expresa miedo literal.

Doctor: How long have you had this headache?
Patient: It's been bothering me for three days, and it's getting worse.
Doctor: I'm afraid it might be a migraine. Let's try some medication and rest.

¿Te animas a compartir tu diálogo?

Questions and Diagnoses.

Practice:

- Post 2 hypothetical questions asked by the doctor.

- Describe the symptoms.

- For each of them, give the doctor’s diagnoses.

Case number 1:

Symptoms: A patient comes to the doctor's office complaining of a persistent cough, and difficulty breathing.

Doctor's Questions:

- When did you first notice these symptoms?

I began to notice 2 weeks ago.

- have the symptoms been getting worse over time?

Yes, they have.

Doctor's Diagnosis:

Based on the symptoms described, the doctor may suspect the patient has developed bronchitis. The persistent cough with phlegm, back pain, and difficulty breathing, are common symptoms of bronchitis. The doctor may order further tests such as a chest X-ray to confirm the diagnosis and prescribe antibiotics to treat the infection.

Case number 2:

Symptoms: A patient presents abdominal pain, bloating, and diarrhea. They report feeling nauseous after eating sometimes and have experienced unintended weight loss over the past few months.

Doctor's Questions:

- Can you describe the nature of your abdominal pain? Is it constant or does it come and go?

My abdominal pain is bad and generally, I have pain 30 minutes after eating, and come and go.

- Have you made any changes to your diet recently?

No, I haven’t.

Doctor's Diagnosis:

Based on the symptoms described, the doctor may suspect the patient is suffering from a stomach infection. The abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, nausea after eating, and unintended weight loss are typical symptoms of stomach infection. The doctor may order further tests such as blood tests, and stool tests to confirm the diagnosis and may prescribe medications to manage the inflammation and symptoms.

++1. Doctor patient dialogue and doctor diagnosis 1++ Doctor: Good morning. How can I help you today? Patient: Hi, Doctor. I've been experiencing a persistent cough for the past two weeks. Doctor: I see. Is the cough accompanied by any other symptoms like fever or difficulty breathing? Patient: No, I don't have a fever, but I do feel a bit tired. Doctor: Alright. Based on your symptoms, it's possible that you have a respiratory infection. I recommend doing a throat swab to check for any bacterial or viral infections. We'll have the results in a day or two.

++2. Doctor patient dialogue and doctor diagnosis 2:++ Doctor: Good morning. How can I assist you today? Patient: Hi, Doctor. I've been having severe headaches for the past week. Doctor: I'm sorry to hear that. Can you describe the nature of the headaches? Are they accompanied by any visual disturbances or nausea? Patient: The headaches are throbbing, and I have been experiencing nausea along with sensitivity to light. Doctor: Based on your symptoms, it's likely that you are experiencing migraines. We can discuss lifestyle modifications and prescribe medications to manage the pain and prevent future episodes.

Doctor – so, you’ve been feeling a bit of pain in your upper belly?

Patient – yes I have, but not only that, I also have had a burning feeling after eating and being full even before I end eating my food, since a week ago I’ve been leaving leftovers.

Doctor – alright, we’ll discard infection with an exam, and after that we’ll treat your ill, but with the information that you had gave I almost can say it is just indigestion, caused by inflammation and irritation in your stomach, if it is like that, then the treatment is really easy and cheap, but fist, let’s see the results in two days.

Doctor - Have you been feeling tired lately? Fever and headaches for two days straight?

Patient – yes, and, I haven’t had mentioned it but, I even woke up all sweaty at one am today.

Doctor – ok, that almost setters everything, you could have caught a flu. I will prescript ibuprofen to you, and you’ll take a pill each eight hours only if you start feeling pain all over your body or you keep with fever, otherwise you just need to drink enough water until get better.

Doctor: So, tell me, how long have you been having a sore throat? Does it hurt more when you swallow food? Patient: I’ve been experiencing it for the last two weeks, and yes, it hurts a lot more.

Doctor: How long has your stomach been hurting? Patient: It’s been like that ever since I ate some bad fish at a restaurant.

Doctor: I’m afraid you may have food poisoning. Patient: I’ve been taking pain-relief pills every six hours, but it doesn’t seem to help at all.

Doctor: Don’t worry. I’ll prescribe an antibiotic, which should help your stomach recover, and I’ll also order a CT scan so we can take a closer look and make sure everything is fine.
