The coaching exit session is where you measure your coachee's final results and answer the big question every client asks: "So coach, how did I do?" If you coach professionals and want to close a program on a high note, this walkthrough shows you how to handle that last conversation with intention.

Think about it like theater. Being a coach is bittersweet because the coaching relationship is finite, just like an actor who plays on stage. It's great while it lasts, and then it has to go [00:41]. That mindset shapes everything about how you wrap up.

What happens in the coaching exit session?

The exit session is the final session where you discuss the important elements of your past program [01:02]. Your coachee started at point A and moved to point B, and now it's time to talk about what actually happened at B.

There are specific things that need to occur here, and they follow a natural order.

How do you measure a coachee's progress?

You measure progress through a final assessment and a progress report. At the start of the program your coachee responded to an assessment, so now they respond again, and comparing both lets you show exactly how much they improved.

How do you measure coaching progress? You compare an initial assessment with a final assessment. The gap between the two, captured in a progress report, shows your coachee how far they moved from A to B.

This is the data-backed part of the session. It turns "I feel like I improved" into something concrete your coachee can see.

Why should you ask your coachee to reflect?

After sharing the numbers, the coach asks the coachee to look back at everything they learned [01:36]. You want them to think about what they liked and what felt challenging.

Those questions provoke reflection on the whole process and all the months you spent together. Reflection is what cements the learning, and it also sets up the emotional close.

How do you inspire a coachee who is leaving?

This is the moment you make your coachee feel inspired to go on [01:52]. You tap them on the back, you cheer them up, and you help them believe they can accomplish anything.

And then, like letting a princess go, you have to let them fly. That image sounds soft, but there's real strategy behind it.

Why is letting go important in coaching? Because you don't want to create a dependency on the coach. The whole point is for the person to fly on their own and stand as a professional without needing you.

Letting go protects your coachee's growth. If they still lean on you after the program, the transformation isn't complete.

Why should you redefine the coaching relationship?

There are two reasons this closing stage matters: first, you let the person go, and second, you redefine your relationship so you become equals [02:24].

Some coaches fall into the trap of living in past glories. They point at a now-famous client and say, "That person was my coachee when they were nobody, and I remind them all the time." Forget that.

The redefinition means your former coachee is now your equal. Consider what that really implies:

They may not be a coach, but they are a professional just like you.
They have worries and mouths to feed.
They have challenges at work, sales to make, and deals to close.

Once you see them as a peer, the relationship stays healthy and mutual instead of stuck in a hierarchy.

How do you close a coaching program on a high note?

Good closure means your coachee walks away inspired, pumped, and especially empowered because they did an amazing job going from A to B [03:07].

The emotional layer here is not optional. It's okay to be emotional and say "I'm going to miss you" [03:39]. That honesty is part of what makes the close land.

So here's your challenge: think about how you would end a program in a high note. What words would you use to inspire a coachee who is already leaving? Be emotional, lean into positive feelings, and write down the phrases you'd choose.
