When you coach, active listening is your most powerful tool, and it starts with using your double-powered ear so you listen more than you speak. This lesson is for anyone learning to coach who wants to sort what a coachee says into useful categories and ask better questions.

Think of information like an iceberg. You see a big chunk of ice on the surface, but below the water there is an even bigger chunk. Your coachee gives you the visible part when they speak, but your job is to notice everything underneath too [00:38].

Why should you listen more than you speak when coaching?

When you coach, the coachee shares how they feel, what they think, and the plain facts of their situation. All of it matters, because every piece gives you different information you can use later.

The goal is not to interrupt or correct. It is to let them talk freely so you can pick up specific information and, later, bounce it back to help them grow.

What does "double-powered ear" mean in coaching? It is the idea that you should listen roughly twice as much as you speak. You have two ears and one mouth, so prioritize hearing your coachee over talking.

How do you categorize facts, meanings, and emotions?

As you listen, sort everything into three buckets. This is the core skill of the lesson, and getting it right changes how you respond [01:15].

Facts: objective, provable things that exist in reality. Example: "I started my job two months ago" or "My company sells perfume" [02:16].
Meanings: what people think or interpret about those facts. Example: "I think I should know more about my job" or "People at the office work super hard" [02:52].
Emotions: how they feel about a topic. Example: "My manager doesn't like me" or "I hate being told what to do" [03:14].

The tricky part is that these three often come mixed together. Your coachee will give you disorganized information, jumping from a fact to a feeling to an opinion in one breath. That is normal.

Can I ask my coachee to give me only the facts? No. Never stop them to say "stick to the facts." Let them speak freely, because that builds rapport. Sorting the information is your job, not theirs.

Why not correct your coachee while they talk?

Interrupting breaks the flow and the trust you are building. If you say "no, stick to the facts," you shut them down right when they are starting to open up [03:40].

Instead, let them speak so they naturally move from surface facts to deeper meanings and emotions. That progression is exactly what you want.

How do you get your coachee to open up and talk more?

Once you know what to listen for, the next question is how. You need to provoke your coachee to speak a lot and share the information you need [04:26].

Start by becoming a trained questioner. Feel good about asking questions, and lean on open questions that begin with what, why, where, and who. These question words invite longer, more honest answers instead of a simple yes or no.

Ask open questions to draw out more detail.
Reduce your CTT, the coaching talking time, so the coachee holds the floor.
Take notes, and keep every note completely objective.

The transition here matters: asking good questions only works if you then get out of the way and let the answers flow.

What is CTT in coaching? CTT stands for coaching talking time, the share of a session the coach spends speaking. A good target is 60/40, with the coachee talking 60 to 70% of the time and the coach 30 to 40% [05:20].

How should you take notes without judging?

Your notes should be totally objective. Do not write a person's name and then slap an adjective on it, because that turns observation into judgment [05:40].

Do not judge when you speak either. Avoid saying "you're wrong," but also avoid "you're right," because both are still judgments. Right or wrong, you are labeling instead of listening. Stay neutral and keep the focus on your coachee.

For your project, prepare a solid list of good questions before your session. You may not use them all, but having them ready means you can listen for information and let your coachee amaze you. What questions will you prepare first? Share them in the comments.
