How to Know If Coaching Is Right for You
Resumen
Deciding if coaching is right for you comes down to one question: will you actually learn and hit your goal after months of sessions? Since coaching costs time, money, and company resources, this guide gives professionals a clear framework to assess both themselves and any coach before committing.
Here is the core of it. If you sit with someone for an hour every month for the next ten months, will you accomplish the goal you care about? That is what you need to answer honestly before you enroll.
What are the conditions for learning through coaching?
Before we talk about coaches, we need to talk about you and the environment around you. These conditions apply to coaching and to any learning experience [00:56].
There are three things that have to be in place:
- A challenge at work. If everything runs smoothly and you have zero problems, you simply will not feel the need to learn anything new.
- A guide. Call it a guru, an Obi-Wan, or a Yoda. You need someone who knows more about your journey than you do.
- Enrollment. This means actively opting into the experience so you are genuinely ready to learn [01:44].
Notice the pattern here: without a real problem to solve, even the best coach in the world cannot help you.
What does enrollment mean in coaching? It is the active choice to opt into the learning experience. You are not just paying for sessions, you are mentally committing to show up ready to learn.
Am I ready to receive coaching?
Once those conditions are met, coaching asks something back from you. And this is the part people underestimate.
Receiving coaching is hard work. A trained professional will put challenges in front of you, so think of Sisyphus pushing that boulder up the mountain [02:16]. You will face hardship, and you have to be ready for it.
Beyond effort, you need two more traits:
- Humility. You have to accept that you do not have all the answers, listen well, study a lot, and stay open to learning new tricks.
- The ability to reshape yourself. Some coachees say "that's a new trick, but it doesn't work for me" and shut down. If instead you have the flexibility to reshape who you are, plus a learning mindset and a hard work mindset, you are probably coaching material [03:07].
So before choosing anyone, ask yourself if you can stay flexible when the advice challenges who you already are.
How do I know if a coaching program is good?
Sometimes your attitude is right and you like the idea, but doubt creeps in during the interview with the coach. To cut through that, split the decision into two halves: the program and the person.
A good program has three ingredients [04:11]:
- Relevant content. If you want to learn how to lead groups and the program covers it, that is a yes.
- A solid methodology. Check what credentials the coaches have as educators. You want professional educators, not improvisers.
- Clear metrics. You want a system that measures where you are now and how much progress you made by the end, the before and the after.
If a coach or coaching company shows you their content, their methodology, and how they measure your before and after, there is a high chance the program is solid. But that is only half the equation.
What should a good coaching program measure? Your starting point and your progress. It should measure how good you are right now and how much you improved by the end, so you can see the before and after clearly.
How do I choose the right coach for me?
The other half is the person, and here you need to run an interview. Treat it like an audition or a job candidacy, because that is exactly what it is [05:32].
In that interview, look for three things:
- Knowledge. Ask how long they have been around and what their area of expertise is. If you need a nutrition coach, they had better know nutrition, not web development.
- Reputation. Did someone recommend them? Do other clients trust them and feel happy with the service they received?
- Chemistry. Do you actually like the coach?
And here comes the most important part. Chemistry is the most crucial factor of all [06:47]. A coach can have amazing credentials, but if the one-on-one feels off and you think "we're not a good fit," do not work with them. Chemistry is what lets you sustain a ten or twelve month relationship and reach real results at the end.
What is the most important factor when choosing a coach? Chemistry. Credentials matter, but if you do not connect with the coach in your one-on-one, you will struggle to sustain a ten to twelve month relationship and see results.
Your challenge: research the coaches in your town
Time for the challenge. Do a little research in your hometown or country and find out who the main coaching providers are [07:29].
Here is what to look for:
- Who the best coaches in town are, using Google and asking around.
- How much they charge and what programs they offer.
- What type they are, whether ontological coaches, business coaches, or something else.
Share your findings in the community so we can start exchanging ideas and knowledge. What did you discover about coaching where you live? Drop your thoughts and let's compare notes.
