Coaching works differently from courses and training because it targets soft skills through a personalized, one on one experience driven by you. If you want to understand what coaching is and where it fits in professional development, this breakdown separates the technical from the behavioral and shows why coaching is the right suit for growing your soft skills at work.

Why do coaches focus on soft skills instead of hard skills?

The answer starts with a core idea in professional development, the branch of education focused on improving skills for professionals [00:20]. To coach well, you first need to know the two big buckets of skills.

Hard skills are technical and measurable. Think speaking a language, using Excel, or mastering CorelDRAW [00:44]. You usually learn these through courses, training, or simulations, structured experiences built to make you better technically [01:36].

Soft skills are behavioral, not technical. Motivating teams, leading, solving conflicts, and managing time all fall here [00:55]. And here is where it gets interesting: a course alone is not enough to teach a soft skill.

What is the difference between hard skills and soft skills? Hard skills are technical abilities like using Excel or speaking a language, learned through courses. Soft skills are behaviors like leadership or conflict resolution, best developed through real scenarios and coaching.

How are soft skills actually taught if courses fall short?

Because behaviors show up in real moments, soft skills need experiences that mirror those moments. The transcript points to three approaches [02:07].

Critical scenarios: real situations where a skill is needed, like using emotional intelligence when a customer shouts at you [02:14].
Role plays: two or three participants act out a situation that would normally require a soft skill [02:35].
Coaching: one on one sessions with a trained coach, especially useful for executives improving soft skills [02:45].

Each of these puts you inside the behavior instead of just describing it. That is the whole point.

What are the three parts of the coaching experience?

Think of coaching as the suit that suits you [03:06]. It rests on three characteristics that make it different from any generic class.

A specific program: you do not hire an all knowing coach. You seek coaching on something concrete, like emotional intelligence, stress management, or nutrition [03:24].
A highly personalized experience: even with the same program, you and your colleague get different results because your profiles differ and the work is tailor made for you [03:57].
Driven by the coachee: the coach does not impose an agenda. You set it, so the growth reflects on you [04:28].

That last point is the heart of coaching. The coachee owns the agenda, and that ownership is what makes real growth possible.

Who sets the agenda in a coaching session? The coachee does, not the coach. Coaching is driven by the person receiving it, so the growth stays focused on their goals rather than the coach's plan.

What types of coaching exist and which one do you need?

There is a big offer out there, and you have probably seen coaches on social media, courses, or television promising to improve whatever you need [05:00]. Most of them fall into a few clear categories.

Life coaching: helps with different aspects of your life, like how you eat, how you think, and how you manage romantic, friendship, and family relationships [05:24].
Work focused soft skills coaching: the specialty highlighted here, aimed at improving specific behaviors at work by understanding the shared challenges and aspirations of professionals [05:52].
Ontological coaching: goes to the deep roots of being, connected to your purpose in life and your connection to the greater world, more philosophical and profound [06:29].

Whatever coach you meet will probably fit one of these three, aside from athletics coaching, which is a different kind entirely [07:03].

What is ontological coaching? It is a deep form of coaching centered on the purpose of your life and your connection to the world. It works on the roots of who you are rather than a single skill or behavior.

Have you ever worked with a professional coach?

Now it is your turn. Head to the discussion board and share what you know about coaching, whether it is a little or a lot [07:12]. If you know good coaches, tell us which category they fall into and let's compare notes. Go and amaze the world.
